The observatory
june 2023An ode to the elusiveness of clouds. Diving into the history of artists, poets, philosophers, and scientists who immersed themselves in the study of clouds. To name a cloud, you need to have a keen eye for shape, color and the large systems in our biosphere that shape them. But what if you would have to name them again?
In the publication “on the modification on clouds” published in 1803, Luke Howard tries to combine science, paintings and poetry to define the nature of clouds. I find it fascinating that with clouds, all our means of understanding the world around us seemingly come together.
The observatory is a replica of a doppler radar. The radarshows a with two chapters two possible ways we can observe clouds; by close attention to details like Constable and by wondering about the human experience of a cloud like Mondriaan.
