Extrude to extrude

June 2023

Climbing rope belongs to of the most over-engineered pieces of fabric. It can hold two average cars statically and is still light weight, dynamic and easy to handle. Every climbing rope can be used for 5 years maximum for safety reasons and will be discarded after. But what to do with this constant flow of the retired material? This project entailed, researching the lifecycle from a climbing rope by looking into nylon extrusion and the life after usage.

Nylon 6 and 6.6 are thermoplastics, thus can be melted and extruded again.
The extrusion machine gives new life to the rope by bringing it back to one of its first stages: hot molten nylon.
